School supplies for orphan children
Congratulations to MYTO, who raised $150 for supplies for their school!
Program concept
Many of the children in the slum community MYTO operates in have been orphaned due to HIV/AIDS, and now live with relatives who cannot afford the school uniforms, books, and transport that is required to attend government funded formal schools. The group uses its meager revenues from other businesses to fund small schools for over 150 children. They currently only have one textbook for each subject, a few pencils, books, chalk, paper and other learning resources to ensure these kids get a fair shot at attending high school. They also provide meals and sports activities that require supplies and equipment.
Background information
MYTO is a community-based organization certified by the Kenyan Ministry of Sports, Gender, Culture and Social Services. MYTO has mobilized over 170 youth to take part in different activities. Their goal is to ensure that members of the community are in a position to support each other, and to discourage undesirable or harmful behaviours such as drug abuse, prostitution, dropping out of school, and early marriage. MYTO raises awareness of issues facing youth, mobilizes youth in Mathare for socially beneficial activities, safeguards and promotes a positive image of youth in society, acts as a resource and role model for youth development, and offers support and care for orphans and vulnerable children. The group intends to establish a resource centre from which they can reach out, and where community members can access information.
