Based in the Starehe constituency of the Mathare slum in Nairobi, WHYNOT was formed by youth within this community and officially registered in 2005 as a self-help group. WHYNOT aims to promote socio-economic development within the community, and envisions a future where Mathare residents enjoy a wide array of opportunities for individual and collective development and growth. They engage in activities supporting peacebuilding and reconciliation, environmental stewardship, community mobilization and other objectives related to community wellbeing. Programmes they run include the following by thematic area: * Environment: waste collection and recycling, tree planting * Sports: football academy, tournaments, indoor games * Education: junior school, library services * HIV/AIDS: orphan care and support, awareness-raising and education for prevention * Entertainment: drama, theatre, acrobatics, music, rap and dance * Business: handicraft production and sale, second-hand clothing sales The group plans to launch an informative community newsletter in the near future to help expand their reach within the community.
