Water for slums This photo was taken by Eastlanders' mobile phone with the following caption: "In my community shortage of water is felt olmost ever day.we as eastlanders we are initiating a water project in our village."

Action Grant: Support Eastlanders youth group who need $2500 to get piped water into their community and a tank to store it during droughts.

Business concept Most residents in the slum community of Jericho have to buy drinking water in 20 litre units. Those with piped supplies only get intermittent municipal water supply. The business concept is to situate a large water tank on land the youth group controls, and pay for a municipal water line to fill the tank. The group will then sell the water to residents at an affordable rate.

Background information of youth group: Working in the community of Jericho in Nairobi, Eastlanders is a group of 30 youth who have come together to address issues of poverty and lack of sanitation in their neighbourhood. Offering affordable waste-collection to around 400 households in their area, the Eastlanders youth are also planning to offer low-cost water sales as an additional income-generating activity that is also a community service, alleviating the pressure that affects the neighbourhood during the regular water shortages that occur there. The youth of Eastlanders also put their energies towards education and awareness-raising activities around HIV/AIDS and other health and environmental issues.
