City council didn't plan for the slum areas, and it is out of their mandate to collect garbage here. NSYG (Nairobi South) actually took and uploaded this photo... =)

Nairobi South Self Help youth Group was started in response to a growing problem of youth unemployment and the attendant issues of crime and drug abuse. The group does ongoing outreach and education to try to shift the community’s attitudes and practices towards environmental and social health. Starting with the creation of a small, informal sewer to provide some drainage for the residents, the group went on to launch a waste-collection service, which is also an income-generating activity. Another segment of the group run a successful car-wash service, which they are looking to expand through the addition of machines and a back-up water tank for the periods when the municipal water supply runs dry.
